HOME STUDY INSTRUCTIONS

Overview

By way of Home Study, you will be undertaking your sacred duty of the education of your children. Your mission will be to teach your children to pray and discover their vocation as children of God. You have far more influence than any teacher. Your role in leading your children to loving Jesus Christ and His Church is so decisive that scarcely anything can compensate for the failure in doing so.

While you will not be “going it alone,” you will be teaching CCD without the support of a weekly in-class session. You will discover that it will take devotion, discipline, fortitude, time, routine and prayer to be successful. Several parents who “put in the time” commented how wonderful the experience was for their relationship with their children and in fact, for their own faith.

Program Materials

  • Gospel Weeklies and Folder
  • Catechism Handbook
  • Bible
  • Notebook

The Basic Lesson Plan

The Gospel Weeklies are an easy-to-follow program. Each Gospel Weekly is dated and along with the Catechism Handbook, meant to be written in. This is not a “do-it-alone” assignment, rather, the Gospel Weeklies are meant to be very participatory. In other words, they are meant to be discussed. Please plan to schedule an hour in the weekly schedule for this. Notebooks should be used for answers to questions, writing a prayer and so on.

Sample Lesson Format

  1. Begin by saying a prayer together.
  2. Provide the Gospel Weekly handout to the child and follow the below steps.

In the Gospel Weekly you will find something to do on the cover; a story with THINK questions; Sunday’s Gospel; a Doctrine section that connects with the Catechism Handbook & Quick Quiz; Faith Word; Our Catholic Faith; TALK; Pray, Think and Act; and puzzles or fill-ins.

  1. Begin with the story and answer the THINK questions.
  2. Read the Gospel narrative out loud, discuss and answer the TALK questions.
  3. Read, discuss and do Quick Quiz in the Doctrine section in the Catechism Handbook.
  4. Go over Our Catholic Faith and Faith Word section.
  5. Read and discuss the Living the Gospel section.
  6. Complete the back cover activity.
  7. Catechism Handbook: The children that attend CCD in class, will be assigned a Know This (“KT”) from the Catechism Handbook. The Know This segment is something the children should learn and memorize. When compiled, I will share the KTs with you.
  8. Close with a prayer of thanksgiving.

Eventually, the Gospel Weekly will be reviewed and there will be testing to measure what has been learned.

“Wait a minute!” you say. “I can’t do all of that!”

The genius of the Gospel Weeklies is that they easily completed at home. There are sections in the lessons that the child is able to do on their own or complete with you (i.e. The Story).  Regardless of how and where to spend the time, program materials are straight forward and easy to follow!

Instruction Regarding the Burial of the Deceased
and the Conservation of the Ashes in the Case of Cremation

("Ad Resurgendum cum Christo"...."To Rise with Christ")

Helpful and instructive information on the proper care for and treatment of cremated remains consistent with the teachings of the Catholic Church has been provided in an informative and reliable document issued by the Holy See's Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith and approved by Pope Francis in 2016.  This Instruction document ("Ad Resurgendum cum Christo"...."To Rise with Christ") is recommended reading for all the Catholic faithful and for funeral directors who assist their clients with Catholic funerals.  The Instruction's information and guidance are recommended to be part of the planning for funeral arrangements and cemetery arrangements.

Please pray for the souls of all the faithful departed.  May they rest in peace.

U.S. Bishops' Statement on Moral Concerns with
Using the Johnson & Johnson Covid-19 Vaccine

The U.S. Conference of Catholice Bishops (USCCB) issued a Statement on Tuesday, March 2, 2021 regarding moral concerns with using the Johnson & Johnson Covid-19 vaccine. The Statement may be accessed by clicking below. The Statement says in part, "if one has the ability to choose a vaccine, Pfizer or Moderna’s vaccines should be chosen over Johnson & Johnson’s." The moral concern arises because the Johnson & Johnson vaccine was developed and tested and is produced with abortion-derived cell lines. The USCCB Statement also quotes the judgment of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith at the Vatican that "when ethically irreproachable Covid-19 vaccines are not available... it is morally acceptable to receive Covid19 vaccines that have used cell lines from aborted fetuses in their research and production process."
